Cyanotype
Project Type
Analog Photography
Date
2021-2025
An analogue photographic process in which the essence of plants can be shown in a unique way. Signed, dated unique pieces are created because the selection and appearance of the plants, usually after pressing, the arrangement on the paper and the process of exposure to sunlight (location, duration, time of day, intensity of the rays) can never be repeated in exactly the same way. Cyanotype is a classic photographic development process that produces Prussian blue, monochromatic images. Developed in the 19th century, cyanotype quickly became established as a simple method of producing photographs, documents, maps and plans (also known as the "blueprint" used by architects). Cyantopia was used by Ata Atkins and other biologists to index plants, making it the very first form of photogram.
After exposure, the images are simply developed in a bowl of cold water and then dried for around 24 hours. The images develop their characteristic deep blue color through an oxidation process.
And although the representation has endless possibilities, I am fascinated by this primal approach to the visibility of special plant creatures.
